There’s no doubt drones make excellent travel companions, but lots of travelers wonder if it’s ok to take their drone on a plane and whether it’s ok to fly drones wherever they’re going.
Does that sound like you? If so, check out these practical drone travel tips so that you can travel safely and smartly with peace of mind.
Keep Batteries in Your Carry-on Bag
When you’re traveling by plane, you can either check your drone in or carry it on the plane with you. If you’re flying with a larger drone, you’ll probably need to check it in, since its case is relatively large and may exceed the airline’s size requirements for carry-ons. If you’re flying with a X8 mini drone, bringing it on the plane is certainly viable.
But regardless of whether or not you check your drone, don’t put batteries in a checked bag! This is because bags aren’t stored in a pressurized environment, and temperatures won’t fluctuate as strongly in the passenger cabin. Also, with your bag in an overhead compartment, airline staff can respond quickly in an emergency.
Stay Below Your Airline’s Watt-Hour Limit
The number of batteries you take on a plane isn’t as significant as their particular watt-hours (Wh). According to the FAA’s website, if your batteries are below 100 Wh, you can carry on as many as you like. If they’re between 101 and 160 Wh, you’re allowed to carry on at most two batteries. X8 MINI batteries are well below 100 Wh at 16.94Wh, as are X8SE batteries at 51.3 Wh.
However, be aware that FAA regulations don’t apply to every airline or country. Be sure to check aviation administration regulations in the country to which you’re traveling and check your airline’s rules.
Use an Appropriate Bag or Case
FIMI has a wide selection of bags at the FIMI Official Store. We recommend using a hard shell case, like the Multi-Functional Backpack. if you plan to check your drone or if you’re concerned about your drone’s safety in general. If you’re carrying on your bag, there are plenty of additional bags to choose from, like the Everyday Sling and Nat Geo Explorer Backpack.
Remember that laws vary from country to country, and laws where you live don’t necessarily apply elsewhere. Respect the regulations in the country your visiting and check their aviation authority’s official website for details.

You have taken the first step into a fun new world. A limitless world with new perspectives and freedoms that come with being un-tethered by gravity, free to travel the skies any way that you chose. Drones can be fun to fly as a hobby, or perhaps you want to create inspiring aerial photography. While this can be a little intimidating at first, with a few simple steps you can take to the skies and master your aerial platform in a safe and controlled way. Today we’ll take a look at some of the important steps and elements that come with flying a drone.
1. How Well Do You Know Your Drone?
Before going airborne, take a few minutes to become familiar with your drone. Learn about the controls, settings, and discover key information about the battery performance. It’s also a good idea to do some research about air traffic and drone rules in your area. To unleash your creativity safely and responsibly, please check out the latest tips, links, and instructional videos.
Even if you have never flown a drone before, you can become a master in a short amount of time with some practice. Many drones offer beginner modes and simulators that allow you to get used to the controls and fly in a safe way, without putting your drone or anyone else in harm’s way. Many of the drones in the FIMI connects the controller to your phone or tablet and a beginner mode that restricts the drone altitude and speed. These two modes provide a great opportunity for novice pilots to build their confidence before embarking on a full-fledged flight.
2. Drone Controls
Many drones on the market use a standard controller layout, consisting of control sticks and buttons. While the appearance of some controllers can differ in shape and size, the fundamental controls are the same. For the sake of simplicity, today we’ll talk about the modes commonly found on consumer drones like the FIMI X8 MINI. Pushing the left joystick up causes the drone to fly up while pushing the joystick down causes the drone to descend. Alternatively, pushing this joystick to the left and right rotates the drone to the left and right, respectively.
The right stick controls the drone’s heading or movement. Pushing the right joystick up, down, left, and right causes the drone to move forward, backward, left, and right, respectively.
You will most likely also have several buttons that allow you to control the camera. These controls can take photos, record video, tilt or pan the camera, as well as give you access to menus. It can help to learn what each button does before flying.
The drone control layout is quite intuitive and easy to operate. Just be sure to remember which side of the drone is the front, so that you can remember which way is forward and backward. For added safety, keep your drone in GPS mode while flying; so that it hovers and maintains its position if the input to the control sticks is ceased.
3. Where Can You Practice Flying?
Once you’ve mastered the controls and you’re ready to take to the skies, the next important step is to study your surroundings. When you arrive at a new location, always take a minute to observe the terrain around you. This is done so that there are no surprises when you take off and are in the air. Take note of where buildings, trees, and power lines are so that you can safely fly your drone. Always be sure to check where local airports and heliports are; for safety reasons, you don’t want to fly close to them. Discover local flying rules and regulations to help you fly with peace of mind.
Before every flight, pay attention to the terrain and prepare for different weather conditions; wind, rain, and temperature can significantly affect flight performance. It is a good plan to postpone your flight if it looks like rain might be on the horizon. Not only can the rainwater affect electronic equipment, but it also can hinder visibility and transmission signals. Much like the rain, wind and temperature can also affect your flight, including, how much battery time you have to work with. Always keep an eye on your drone’s battery levels so that you have enough time to return and land.
4. Pre-Flight Checklist
Check the physical condition of the drone. Look for signs of wear, or cracks in the propellers; Check the rules and regulations for the area you plan to fly in; Check that your batteries are charged and have adequate power for flight; Check that your controller and drone are properly connected; Pay attention to the weather conditions; Check that the immediate area around your drone to determine if it’s clear to take off and land; Check your camera settings. Being able to see what your drone sees makes for safer flight; Be sure there’s a memory card in your drone if you plan to take pictures or video; Announce to anyone close to the drone that you are about to take off; Monitor the drone settings as you fly. Once you’re comfortable with the controls and how your drone operates, just remember that practice makes perfect! You can get out there, have fun, and get creative. There’s a whole new world waiting for you.
5. Helpful Flying Tips
Always keep spare batteries with you. To keep your drone flying for long periods of time, have some spares! Keep a landing pad with you. This one might seem a little obvious, but it can become the make or break element in some scenarios. A folding landing pad, a piece of wood, or even a rolled-up carpet can help you take off in long grass, snow, or even dusty conditions. Study maps! Look at satellite maps to find new areas to fly. If you’re looking for wide-open areas, or fun and interesting landmarks to shoot, all it takes is a little research to find great new spots. Have fun, but be respectful! Drones are a lot of fun, but you must keep a safe distance from people, cars, and houses. Keep your drone in a hard case or protective bag. Your drone is an investment, keep it protected during transportation. A case also enables you to keep your batteries and chargers with you at all times. Use your drone to extend your range when you go on adventures and explore. Travel with it, hike with it, explore with it. You can use a drone to discover amazing new perspectives and angles. Have fun and get creative!
6. Safety Tips
Research the drone regulations and laws in your local area. When necessary, register your drone with your local aviation office (FAA in the United States). Click here for more information about drone regulations and up-to-date safety guidance; Fly with a clear line of sight; Do not attempt to exceed your drone’s transmission range; Monitor weather conditions; Fly in ample lighting conditions; Replace damaged propellers immediately; Have another person help you as a spotter. An extra set of eyes can be incredibly helpful; Be respectful; be aware of all your surroundings when you fly. With a little bit of planning and preparation, flying a drone can be done safely. As you become more comfortable with your drone, flying becomes more natural. Your drone will inspire your creative projects, giving you new perspectives and limitless possibilities.

Help your child build their own drone from scratch. When the sun comes back, it gives them a reason to play outside - and we can all agree that today's kids need something more.
With step-by-step instruction, FIMI X8 MINI Camera drone instruction can teach kids the basics of aerodynamics and load balancing. Furthermore, it enhances their practical skills and confidence. The end result is a drone that uses drone technology to provide the best flying experience. It even does 360-degree stunt flips, so the fun continues long after the build is over.
With multiple configurations and compatibility with popular brands, kids can get creative in the design and customize the FIMI X8 MINI Camera drone to suit them. Even adults will love the easy build and creative results.
As a first-time camera drone pilot, flying up and forward was hard enough for me, so when FIMI X8 MINI Camera drone is coming, suggested I could shoot cinematic footage. It's actually possible for an inexperienced pilot like me to accomplish advanced shots.
There's always someone learning to try new skills, and while I didn't capture the most engaging content while learning the shots, I saw how it made flying between shots possible. Before the FIMI X8 MINI Camera drone, it was difficult for even the most skilled pilots to steer the drone to the exact same vantage point, or to fly smoothly in reverse in the same way it had flown before. Automatic flight paths exist, but with these, the user often still has to manually find the correct camera angle to shoot again and again.
These high-quality drones typically cost around $300 , which will save you 30%.

After its first drone launch in 2017 FIMI is getting better every day. Xiaomi MI 4k Drone was the first drone to launch under the FIMI sub-brand of Xiaomi. FIMI X8SE is the most-loved drone from the company and always gets sold in few minutes. Now imagine a MINI drone with 8KM of flight time, a real 4K camera and many more features. Do you think all the facts on the paper are satisfied by the drone?
Today FIMI get their hands on the Pro version of the drone which claims flies 1 minute more. Let’s get to the review and provide you with all the answers to your questions.
Here is a quick review of the drone. So, did you buy yourself a FIMI drone MINI? Did you pre-order it? Did you have it coming? Well, if you still have it coming, let me tell you, you are going to be extremely happy making this decision because I was impressed with this little model.
FIMI X8 MINI Review: To start with the MINI drone, the drone is a direct competition to the DJI MINI 2 drone. Why are companies working hard to make the drone’s weight less than 250grams? The answer to this is the regulations for drones in certain countries like United States, Canada, and Europe. The reason behind this is if the drone is less than 250grams fall, it will not cause damage compared to the heavier drone. Under these circumstances, customers do not have to register their drone in various countries.
FIMI is still to launch its Pro version of battery which will reduce the weight of the drone to 245grams. With the standard battery, the weight of the drone is 258grams. So, until we get the Pro version of the battery, we will have to register the drone under FAA.
Unboxing: The package is very small with the thank you card from FIMI. In the box, we received the additional propellers in the package but a different box. In the main box of FIMI MINI, we get our glorious MINI drone with propellers pre-installed. It comes with a single battery that can be charged with a type-C cable. Under the FIMI X8 MINI, here comes the controller which is very light in weight and easy to carry. In the end, we also get the USB cables to charge the batteries and connect the drone with different smartphones along with the screw-driver.
Design: When it comes to the design of FIMI X8 MINI,the controller of the FIMI X8 MINI drone is quite different from the DJI drone. This is kind of a smaller version of the FIMI X8 SE 2020 version and fits the smartphone inside which is pretty cool. This cool designed drone comes in a small size of 145 X 85 X 56 mm. The biggest advantage of the drone is, FIMI MINI can fly up to 31 minutes on a single charge. As the weight of the drone is pretty less, we would say that it is impossible to fly this drone under harsh conditions. The reason is the PCBs are exposed to the elements.
The plastic finish of the drone feels superior just like the FIMI X8 Se 2020. When we open up the battery, we get the tiny space that might have reduced the weight. Under it comes the SD-card slot, and the micro-USB slot.
FIMI X8 MINI Update: The very first day we started to fly and was told to update the drone. But we could not find any firmware update. Here is the package of the firmware. The drone did not auto-update. I did the gimbal calibration and controller calibration and started the flight with FIMI X8 MINI.You will have to get the 32GB card to use it in the drone. If you have the 64GB card, you can use it but will have to make the partition and use it in 32GB.
Camera: To start with the camera, the 12MP Sony CMOS sensor will help to provide the 4K videos with a viewing angle of 80 degrees and 3-Axis stabilization. In the video section, we will not get the 4K (60fps) but it comes with 4K(30fps) video recording. The bit rate is enough which is 100bit.Similar to the DJI drone, the FIMI X8 MINI comes with the activity tracking and GPS function.
FIMI X8 MINI Battery: If you are the one who has received the drone, will get the lithium-ion battery which will get the drone to 259 grams. But if you get the Pro version battery it will take you to 245grams.
Caution: You might get the system pre-heating; this is normal in the drone sometimes. So, you will not have to worry here. Simply restart the drone and you will good to go.
We saw in some videos, the sky look blur, but that is not at all. The sky looks incredible and here are some images we captured on our first flight. Also, the drone handles the wind easily, nothing is bothering the drone also if it is a lightweight quadcopter.
Our Verdict: Overall the FIMI X8 MINI is impressive. We are more than pleased with the performance of the drone. We did not see any titled horizon at all in any flight. Everything looks very good, the lens is clear. I was worried looking at other people’s videos, like blown out videos. On my fpv screen, it looks really good. We paid $319 for this FIMI X8 MINI, and I think that is worth the money.

Reviewed by: https://www.remoteflyer.com/fimi-x8-mini-the-most-powerful-budget-mini-drone-review-2021/
So, should you buy the Fimi X8 Mini? Yes, it’s worth the money and the hype. It has an ActiveTrack, excellent camera, above-average build quality, extended battery life, and advanced flight modes. These are all the features you get in a Mini 2, but you’ll get them at a lower cost.
Here is a detailed review of this drone:
Camera:
The Fimi X8 is equipped with a 4K HDR camera, a 1/ 2.6-inch sensor, 12MP still photos’ resolution, and an 80 degrees field of view. Coupled with the 3-axis gimbal, you can rest assured that you will be recording smooth footage even when it’s windy or when you have to turn your drone often.
Another crucial feature, especially for professional photographers, is the ability to take photos in JPEG and RAW format. RAW gives you more detail to work with, making it more accessible during the editing process.
You also get a 3X lossless zoom, which makes it great when you need to photograph from a distance. And for those who love night photography, especially in cities, the Fimi X8 Mini has an inbuilt night shooting feature built on the Hisilicon professional AI Algorithm.
Flight Modes:
A high-quality camera wouldn’t be fun without intelligent flight modes, and the Fimi X8 Mini isn’t lacking in that area.
Smart Tracking Modes – This is a version of the follow-me mode you’ll find in most drones. What you do is select an object of interest, and the drone will follow you from behind. It’s excellent for athletes, hikers, vloggers, or anyone who’d want to film themselves when outdoors. I consider this a plus since none of the DJI Mini series has a follow-me feature. However, before launching this app, make sure you check and make sure there are no obstacles.
One–Tap Shots: This feature is quite handy if you want to take quick cinematic shots without any latency or blur.
Flight Plan Shooting: Also known as waypoint flying, this is where you pre-determine the path the drone will follow and focus on photography or any other tasks as the drone flies on autopilot.
Time-Lapse: Photos taken using the time-lapse technique are mesmerizing, but you have to set the frequency manually in some cases. But for the Fimi X8, there is an inbuilt feature that makes it easy. The next time you go night shooting, try taking a time-lapse photo of a highway with lots of traffic.
Live Streaming: Do you want to share your footage live with your friends or fans? The Fimi X8 allows you to Livestream through social media channels.
Panorama: This is a feature that allows you to take wide-angle photographs easily. You can use it for landscape photography or even night photography.
SAR Mode: The camera, 3X zoom, and excellent transmission make this drone a suitable model for search and rescue missions.
Flight Time:
Thirty minutes of flight time is quite impressive for a drone in this price range. However, depending on the conditions you’re flying in, sometimes this drone averages 25 Minutes.
Battery:
Now, The Fimi X8 Mini comes with two batteries; a 2400mAh Li-Ion battery that’s heavier and a lighter 2200mAh LiPo battery.
Also, LiPo batteries deliver better performance than Li-ion batteries but make sure you follow the appropriate care procedures for charging, discharging, and storage.
Operating Range:
Fimi improved on their previous drones and made the connection stronger (It uses the 5.87 GHz WiFi transmission). This allows the drone to achieve an operating range of up to 8 KM.
I tested the drone’s transmission in an open field, and it held up to the advertisement, though I didn’t travel all 8 kilometers.
Controller:
SO, how does the controller fair compared to its competitors? It’s pretty solid. It features two antennas and slides sideways to accommodate the size of your smartphone.
For some devices, you may have to remove the cover so that it fits nicely into the controller.
The sticks are pretty comfortable for your hands, and they are also removable and will fit nicely under the controller. There is the record button and the dial button on the left side above the joysticks to control the camera.
First Flight:
To launch the drone, click the Auto-Launch button, and drag it to the box and hold. Once you release it, the drone will automatically take off. And that’s it, the drone will hover, and you can start playing around with the controls, testing the speed, testing the camera, etc.
What’s It Like to Fly the Fimi X8 Mini?
As I mentioned earlier, I got to test this drone, and it’s worth the money. I started by going in an open field to conduct a range test.
And as I mentioned earlier, while I didn’t travel all 8 Kilometers, it held up the connection for a very long distance.
To test the camera, I took a couple of shots in my neighborhood, and they were pretty smooth, but overall, the camera is good.

It’s a small and lightweight drone that weighs less than 250g and comes with some fantastic features. The drone comes with an excellent camera that can capture images in 12MP in both JPEG & RAW format and records video footage in 4k at 30fps. The camera is stabilised by a 3-axis gimbal for smooth and stable videos and transmits live video feed in 720p. Its GNSS module can connect with 3 satellite systems for better coverage, and it comes with 3 GPS-enabled intelligent flight modes. It also has a very good flight time and has a control range of 8km.
Fimi have released several advanced drones and the most popular is their Fimi X8 SE, which comes with some amazing features and is a direct competitor to the DJI Mavic Pro. The Fimi X8 Mini drone comes with many similar features but comes in a more compact and travel-friendly design and weighs less than 250g.
The first thing you will notice is that the drone is very similar in design to the Mini 2, which is a good thing as it is very aesthetically pleasing to the eyes. Its small compact and foldable design allows you to easily carry it around with you and makes an excellent choice for a travel-friendly photography drone. One thing I have to note is that there two types of batteries that are compatible with this drone. The standard battery which you get the drone package is a lithium-ion battery that provides a flight time of around 30 minutes, which is pretty good. The Pro battery is a lithium polymer battery which more energy efficient, provides a minute longer flight time, and puts the overall drone weight at 242g, which will not require any registration.
The drone has a triple GNSS module that connects with GPS, GLONASS & BeiDou satellites system for far greater coverage and the ability to track the drone on your smartphone with better accuracy. It also allows for the drone’s flight to be more stable and allows the drone to fly autonomously via its intelligent flight modes.
As the drone can connect with so many satellite systems, it will be rare that you will find an area that has a weak signal, however, the drone also comes with an optical flow sensor that will allow you to fly the drone if there is no GPS signal. As it is a very small drone, you can fly it indoors, however, make sure the area is large and spacious with little to no obstructions.
There is a memory card slot on the back of the drone, it advised that you purchase a fast memory card, preferably U3 or above. This is so that you can record 4k video footage, which you will not be able to do if you were to record videos over WiFi on your smartphone. Also, something else worth noting is that the card will have to be formatted to the FAT32 file system so that it records properly.
There is a small LED light on the back of the drone that will flash in certain ways to indicate things like compass calibration, low battery, internal error, ready to fly, and if its firmware is being updated.
Despite being a small and lightweight drone, the Fimi X8 Mini actually holds up well in windy conditions. One of the reasons for this is because it comes equipped with powerful brushless motors that have a high KV rating and allows for the drone to hover relatively well, fly smoothly, and fly at a top speed of 35 mph.
As for the drone’s remote controller, it follows a similar design pattern to the original Fimi X8 controller but this one is a lot smaller. To attach a smartphone, the left-hand side of the controller is extended which allows you to slot a large smartphone in the middle. You can fly the drone without a smartphone but then you wouldn’t get access to the drone’s FPV feature or its intelligent flight modes.
To access these features, there is a new app that has been developed specifically for the Fimi X8 Mini drone. It’s called the Fimi Navi Mini and Its interface is very clean and easy to navigate and allows you to control many aspects of drone flight as well as give you more control over the camera settings. There is no doubt that one of the main driving factors of the popularity of drones is because many of them come with very good cameras. The Fimi X8 Mini drone is no different, its camera is one of the best in its price range and is comparable to the DJI Mini 2.
Overall, a very impressive drone camera and definitely one of the best in its price range. Something you have to remember is that you will need a fast memory card to record videos and photos in their highest resolution. This is where the Fimi X8 Mini has an advantage over the DJI Mini 2 and may be the reason why many people will opt to get it instead of the Mini 2.

When it comes to camera-equipped flying machines, DJI isn’t the only make in town.
Sure, most shoppers are probably going to snap up a Mavic, other DJI-branded drone of some description when looking for a reliable, safe and feature-packed quadcopter, but there are some viable alternatives to the market leader. The Fimi X8 Mini is one of them. This tiny 4K'drone is slightly cheaper but promises many of the same benefits. Let’s find out whether those claims fly.
Design: Welcome to the fold
It’s a big deal, how small the X8 Mini is. Or to be more precise, how light it is: it weighs a smidge less than 250g, which means anyone can fly it under the UK’s current drone laws. There’s no need for the pilot to undertake the Civil Aviation Authority’s online exam or hold a flyer ID. The drone itself folds to a trim and easily portable size, as does its remote controller. You’ll be able to toss both in a bag and carry them around all day without any major worries, which makes them ideal for holidays – or day trips where you might not be planning any specific aerial photography, but want the option just in case.
Build quality is decent rather than stellar (the DJI Mini 2 feels like it’s made of slightly sturdier stuff), but for the price we have no major complaints. The controller has some clever touches too, like the fact you can unscrew the thumb sticks and store them in little recesses in its base. It comes with cables to connect Lightning, USB-C and micro USB smartphones, and its spring-loaded clamp design can accommodate a range of phone sizes.
Flight control: Air buddy
The X8 Mini has a theoretical control range of 8km, which isn’t quite as far as the 10km claimed by the DJI Mini 2 – but still far farther than you’re ever actually going to fly. I had no major issues with transmission cutting out or control being lost while testing the drone, and in general the live HD video feed to my controller-connected iPhone worked like a charm.
Taking off is as simple as swiping your finger across your phone screen, while the twin-stick controls are very easy to master. The X8 Mini is a surprisingly responsive and fun drone to fly, zipping along at a pacey 16m/s in good weather conditions. It doesn’t have forward-facing anti-collision sensors, so if you towards a wall or tree it’s not going to stop itself from crashing. However, It does have downward-facing sensors to aid safe landing and hovering.
In-flight features: auto locate
If you happen to lose track of the X8 Mini, real-time GPS tracking means it still knows exactly where it is. Just tap the return-to-home button in the app or on the controller and it’ll automatically come back to its take-off point.
The GPS also helps it to hover in place and not get pushed off by the wind. It has enough motor power to withstand a "level 5" breeze of about 8.5-10.5m/s according to its makers, and I found it quite stable in blustery coastal conditions.
The rechargeable battery (which can be topped up using a USB-C cable, so no need for an external AC charger) provides up to 31 minutes of flight time, which is a tiny bit longer than the DJI Mini 2. As with DJI drones, the app gives you an alert a few minutes before it runs flat, ensuring you have plenty of time to get the drone back to you and landed before the power dies.
The App itself is quite a bit simpler than DJI’s, but that’s not necessarily a bad thing. With fewer options and menus to delve into, it feels focused on the essentials: showing you a clean live feed from the X8 Mini’s camera, its position on a map and giving you access to the necessary controls for the camera functions.
Image quality: A sharp showing
Image quality is quite impressive for such a small camera, with 4K footage showing off plenty of sharp detail, even if dynamic range is a bit limited. The gimbal-mounted camera uses a 12MP Sony CMOS sensor that enables it to shoot in a wide range of resolutions and frame rates. As well as 12MP and 8MP stills (in JPEG and/or raw DNG format), it can capture 4K video at up to 30fps, 2.7K at up to 60fps, 1080p at up to 90fps and 720p at up to 120fps. It also supports HEVC H.265 encoding, which means users with faster computers can fit a lot more video on the drone’s memory card than when shooting standard H.264-encoded footage.
The three-axis gimbal does a great job of keeping your footage stable when the drone is airborne, given the drone’s tiny size and the wind speeds in my seaside test setting.
Fimi X8 Mini verdict
The Fimi X8 Mini is a credible (and slightly cheaper) alternative to the DJI Mini 2.
The fact that it comes in just under the crucial 250g weight limit is key to its appeal. If for some reason you don’t want the DJI Mini 2 , the X8 Mini makes for a more than adequate alternative.

How to pick the best beginner drone for you-----from:https://www.techradar.com/best/best-beginner-drones
Beginner drones come in a wide range of shapes and sizes, but the best ones all share a few key features. If you're just starting out, then a polished companion app will be invaluable – some of the best we've tried are from DJI, Ryze and FIMI. A drone that’s happy to hover in place will also allow you to carefully learn the controls and assess how sensitive it is to control inputs.
If you're looking for a beginner drone with a camera, then bear in mind that you'll need to spend a bit more to get genuinely usable footage. Look for a camera that has at least a 1080/30p mode to get a really high-quality camera.
Think about where you're most likely to fly the drone, too. If you're happy to stay indoors or in sheltered spots near your home, then a small, toy model (like the Ryze Tello or Revell Icon) will be fine. But for more ambitious flights, you'll need a drone that can both withstand gusts of wind and a few crash landings.
Drones of any size will always be measured up against the best that DJI has to offer.Fimi’s X8 Mini could be the perfect entry-level 4K drone. It’s slightly cheaper than the Mini 2, yet offers many of the features that make its flying rival a winner. Light enough to fall within the sub-250g category, the folding quadcopter is properly portable (as is the well-designed remote, thanks to thumbsticks that unscrew and tuck into the base). Despite its compact size, the Fimi flies well in normal conditions and can also survive blustery weather. At 30 minutes, battery life is solid, while 4K footage captured at 30fps by the 12MP Sony CMOS sensor is sharp and stable – in large part thanks to the 3-axis mechanical gimbal which keeps things steady. The companion app is simple but effective, too. So why doesn’t it topple the DJI Mini 2? While the all-round package is compelling for the price, it’s not quite as polished as DJI’s effort. You don’t get forward-facing collision sensors, either. But if for any reason you don’t want a DJI drone, the Fimi X8 Mini comes home in a convincing, and more affordable, second place.
How we test beginner drones
When it comes to beginner drones, their usability and flying importance is just as important as their cameras – so we place equal emphasis on both during our testing.
To test the former, we run through their stabilization in the air, overall responsiveness and their top speed. Most beginner drones lack obstacle avoidance powers, but if they do have them we fly them though an obstacle course to see how well they work.
After checking the drone's battery life claims based on real-world flights, we then move onto their cameras. Most beginner drones have small sensors that struggle in high-contrast situations, but we fly them through a variety of lighting conditions to see where their breaking point is and in what conditions you can realistically expect usable footage.
We then evaluate their footage, taken at a range of frame-rates, on a calibrated monitor, alongside some of the drone's sample still photos. When it comes to image quality, we look at detail, sharpness across the frame, and high ISO noise handling. We then combine these results with our overall impression of the drone's design, features and value to produce our final verdict.]]>

Fimi X8 Mini review
]]>
The Fimi X8 Mini is an entry-level drone with some serious capabilities. While it’s relatively affordable, beautifully compact and lightweight enough to be classed alongside toy quadcopters, it’s no child’s plaything: the camera supports 4K video and the battery supports 30 minutes of flight – over a range of up to 8km, no less.
With a simple but effective companion app and well-designed remote controller, Fimi has created a strong all-round package here. This drone can be flown in blustery conditions, grabbing strikingly sharp and stable footage as it does so, and its folding design means it can be tossed in a small backpack or handbag every time you head out for the day – just in case you happen across something that deserves to be photographed or videoed from the air. It can also be charged from any USB port, thanks to its battery’s USB Type-C port.
Design and controller
One of the main selling points of the Fimi X8 Mini is its sub-250g weight. According to our digital scales, it’s 244g with a memory card inside – which means that in some regions (like the US) it won't need registering.
The battery can be charged directly via a USB Type-C cable, and because the USB-C port is located on the battery itself, it’ll charge whether it’s mounted in the drone or not – a nice touch. On the drone itself there’s a microSD card slot for storage and a micro USB port (used only for transferring images and videos direct from the drone’s card to a computer).
The controller is a lot more solidly constructed than the drone, feels fine in your hands, and boasts some clever (if not entirely original) design touches: the thumb sticks can be removed and stored in little recesses on the bottom edge, while the entire thing can be stretched out to accommodate pretty much any size of smartphone (and even some smaller tablets). It comes with adapters for Lightning, USB-C and micro USB devices, and just like the drone is charged via USB-C. With the thumb sticks and any devices removed, it measures 165 x 89 x 47mm and weighs 260g: nicely portable, we think.
The controller has a simple control layout. Under the left stick is the power button and a four-LED battery indicator, while under the right stick you’ll find a return-to-home button: tap this if you lose sight of the drone or it becomes disconnected from your phone and it’ll fly back to its take-off point. On top, your forefingers have easy access to a wheel that adjusts the camera tilt, a shutter button and a button that toggles between still image and video capture.
Features and flight
Fimi claims the X8 Mini has a theoretical transmission range of up to 8km from the controller. That’s a little less than the 10km offered by the DJI Mini 2, but it’s all academic really: many countries' regulations state that a drone has to remain visible to the pilot while they’re flying it, so anything beyond a few hundred meters is breaking the law.
All we can say is that during our review process the controller, our iPhone and the X8 Mini maintained a solid connection roughly 99 percent of the time. It has real-time GPS tracking to ensure it can return to home in the event of a signal drop, and the app uses no-fly zone geofencing to prevent take-off close to airports and other restricted areas.
The X8 Mini has downward-facing sensors, which aid take-off and landing, but launch it straight into a wall or tree and it won’t do be able to stop itself.
It does offer the same level of wind resistance as the Mini 2, though: level 5, which means it can withstand a “fresh breeze” of 8.5-10.5m/s. In practice, we found it pretty stable, even on a blustery day on a coastal clifftop where the wind speed definitely exceeded that.
It did tilt too much for the camera’s gimbal to fully compensate, but in terms of actual flight stability we had no real problems getting it where we wanted it to go. It’s a nippy, responsive flyer that controls nicely and can move at a fair clip when pushed: up to about 16m/s in fact (or faster with the wind behind it).
With up to 30 minutes of flight time on a full charge (this will vary depending on wind speed and other factors), we have no complaints about battery life either. You’ll get a warning through the app when power is ebbing, and the aforementioned return-to-home button can be tapped to take the leg (or thumb-) work out of the retrieval process.
The Fimi Navi Mini app is an essential part of the flight process, and we’re happy to report that, while it’s a little rough around the edges in comparison to DJI’s imperious Fly app, it does everything it needs to in a reasonably tidy fashion. The UI is clean and simple, doesn’t feel loaded with extraneous options and confusing menus, and the app never crashed on us in the middle of a flight.
It even offers a 5.8GHz Wi-Fi flight mode that lets you ditch the hardware controller and create a direct connection between your phone and the X8 Mini, flying it using touchscreen controls. While this is a much less comfortable way to control things (and cuts the range to just 100m), it’s handy to have as a backup option.
The app includes a handful of automatic flight modes, which let you set a tracking point by dragging a box around an on-screen object (you, for example) and then have the drone fly an automated route while keeping said object in the centre of its frame. We’ve included the spiral mode in our sample video below (note that we’ve sped it up in post-production). What the drone won’t do is, say, follow behind you while you ride a bike or jetski by tracking the controller location.
Video and image quality
The Fimi X8 Mini is no slouch in the imaging department. Its 12MP Sony CMOS sensor and 3-axis mechanical gimbal form a solid foundation for aerial video and photography, enabling the capture of 4K footage at 24/25/30fps, 2.7K at 24/25/30/50/60fps, 1080p at 24/25/30/50/60/90fps and 720p at 100/120fps.
In addition to standard AVC/H.264 encoding, HEVC/H.265 encoding is supported (great for owners with beefy computers), and the option to shoot with a flat F-log profile gives color graders plenty to work with in post-production.
